Minutes of Executive Committee Meeting
Col. William E. Weber Chapter 142, KWVA
June 6, 2017

In Attendance: Commander Mount, Vice Commander Becker, Secretary Wienhoff, Chipley, Fox, Rinehart, Malavenda, Cody and Kephart
Unable to Attend: Treasurer Eader

Commander Mount called the meeting to order at 11:35 am.

Minutes of the May 2, 2017 meeting were presented by Secretary Wienhoff and were approved on a motion by Becker, second by Fox.

The Treasurer’s Report consisting of the Balance Sheet for May 31, 2017 and Income and Expense Report for May 2017 and was presented by Commander Mount in the absence of Treasurer Eader. After review, the report was approved on a motion of Chipley, second by Malavenda.

Commander Mount reviewed the following items:

The Woodsboro Parade went well with Wienhoff, Cody, Becker, Kephart and Murphy providing vehicles.

There was a big crowd in DC for the Memorial Day Parade. Commander Mount, Dr. Kim and Kyu Tae Chang participated. Bus transportation was provided, and Ron Twenty and his wife from Chapter 312 provided sandwiches. Commander Mount participated in the rose laying ceremony but Kim and Chang were not able to participate because of a mix up in assigning participants.

The Memorial Day Field of Honor presentation of over 600 3'x5’ flags by the Knights of Columbus at the corner of Prices Distillery Road and Route 80 in Ijamsville, MD was very impressive, as were the guest speakers. Chipley and Wienhoff attended. Eader, Kephart and Malavenda attended the Legion ceremony at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

On June 3rd Chapter members presented the Colors for the Veterans History Project event at Country Meadows.

On June 23rd at 9 am there will be a Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation and Korean Embassy will conduct a Memorial Ceremony at the KWV Memorial in Washington followed by a lunch at the Ambassador’s Residence. The Embassy will provide a bus. Eight members have signed up to go.

Our Color Guard presentation for the opening ceremony of the Golden Gears Car Club is scheduled for 10:00 am June 24th at Keys Stadium parking lot. Be there at 9:45 in class A uniform with Jacket to carry a flag. The Club will sponsor our Chapter for the car show.

There will be a guest speaker from Maryland relay at our July 12th meeting who will tell us about free services available for those who cannot hear well on the phone.

On July 26 the Army Twilight Tattoo at Fort Myers salutes Korean War Veterans. There will be a reception at Fort Myers officers club at 5 pm with the Twilight Tattoo at Whipple Field, Ft. Myers at 6:30 pm.

There will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Korean War Memorial on July 27 at 10:00 am. A bus will be provided if a group of us wants to attend.

Our Chapter picnic will be held at Dutch’s Daughter restaurant this year starting at noon. Fee will be $15 with picnic food on the menu. Reservation form will be in the July Newsletter. Thirteen members have signed up to attend so far.

The KWVA National Convention is being held in Norfolk, VA on October 4 - 8. Information on attending is in the Graybeards or the KWVA website if you wish to attend.

The KWVA will be the honored unit at the Veterans Day Ceremony at Arlington Cemetery on November 11, 2017. There will be 180 seats at the Amphitheatre reserved for Korean War Veterans and there will be a reception at the Women in Military Museum after the Ceremony and at 4 pm there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Korean War Memorial. A bus will be available.

Old Business: - none

New Business:

On July 10th there will be a veterans Recognition and Resource event at the Frederick Dept. of Aging on Taney Avenue. Details will be in the July Newsletter.

There being no further business to discuss, a motion to adjourn was made by Chipley, second by Fox. Meeting adjourned at 12:15 pm.

Minutes of Member Meeting
Col. William E. Weber Chapter 142, KWVA
June 14, 2017

Commander Mount called the meeting to order at 2:30 pm.

Chaplain Rinehart offered the opening prayer and the members pledged allegiance to the flag.

Minutes of the May 10, 2017 meeting were read by Secretary Wienhoff and were approved by motion of Chipley, second by Malavenda.

The Treasurer’s report was presented by Commander Mount consisting of the Balance Sheet and Income and Expense for May 2017. After review, the report was approved by motion of Col. Weber, second by Rinehart.

Welfare Chairman Reinhart reported a get well card had been sent to Jack Droneburg and a sympathy card to Bob Eader on the loss of his sister. Commander Mount stated that if anyone knows of someone who should receive a card, call Gene.

Commander Mount reported on the following matters:

  • All went well on May 28th at the Woodsboro Memorial Day Parade thanks to Glenn Wienhoff, Richard Cody, Fred Becker, Reggie Kephart and Wendell Murphy for providing vehicles.
  • There was a big crowd at the May 29th National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. Commander Mount, Dr. Kim and Mr. Chang enjoyed the trip. Only disappointment was that Dr. Kim and Mr. Chang did not get to participate in the laying of a rose at the Memorial.
  • The Field of Honor Event on May 29th at St. Ignatius Church in Ijamsville presented over 600 3 X 5 foot flags dedicated to Veterans and First Responders. Chip Chipley commented on the quality of the guest speakers’ speeches.
  • Several Chapter members participated in the MT. Olivet Cemetery event put on by Legion Post 11.
  • On June 3 we presented Colors for a Veterans History Project event at Country Meadows and presented a check for $250 to Project President Priscilla Ralls. Thanks to Bob, Chip, Tony, Gene, Reggie and Ted for attending.
  • The planned June 23 Ceremony at the Korean War Veterans Memorial by KWV Memorial Foundation and Korean Embassy has been canceled.
  • On June 24 our Chapter 142 Color Guard is to present Colors for the Golden Gears Car Club opening ceremony of their car show at Harry Grove Stadium. Be in place by 9:45 am.
  • Col. Weber noted that on June 25 there will be a reading of the names of KIAs of the 13 other nations that participated in the Korean War. He encouraged members to attend if possible.
  • The Executive Committee will meet on July 5th since July 4th falls on our normal meeting day.
  • On July 10 the Frederick County Department of aging will present a Veterans Recognition and Resource Day. There will be a lot of information of interest to Veterans. Lunch will be available for $5. Judge Rolle is the featured speaker and there will be entertainment. The event starts at 9, lunch is at 12 and the event ends at 2. Bob Eader and I will show our pop up display.
  • At our July 12th Meeting we will have a speaker from Maryland Relay who will tell us of free services available for those who cannot hear well on the phone.
  • On July 26 there will be an Army Twilight Tattoo saluting Korean War Veterans at Whipple Field at Ft. Myers at 6:30 pm with a reception at the Ft. Myers Officers club prior to the event at 5pm.
  • On July 27th there will be a Wreath Laying Ceremony at DC Memorial at 10am. Since members had not expressed an interest in that event it was decided to have a Wreath Laying at the Frederick Monument at 10 am. The Commander asked the Secretary to put a notice in the local paper announcing the Commemoration.
  • The Chapter 142 Picnic will be held indoors this year at Dutch’s Daughter Restaurant on September 16 at noon. Details and a reservation form will be in the July - September Newsletter.
  • October 4 - 8 are the dates of the National Convention being held in Norfolk, VA. Look in Graybeards or the National website for full details.
  • The November 11 there will be a Ceremony in the Amphitheater at the Tomb of Unknown at Arlington Cemetery and a reception following at Women in Military History Museum and subsequent wreath laying at our DC Memorial. Bus will be provided. KWVA is the host organization this year. Space has been requested for Mount, Wienhoff, Eader, Becker, Chipley, Murphy, Rinehart, Malavenda, Cody, Kephart and Miller.

Old Business:

  • The latest report from Citizens is that we have paid $123 for a Pizza Party and $245 for haircuts in 2017. The balance in the needy veterans fund is $2,052.11.

New Business:

  • The Commander asked the Secretary to read the names of nominees for officers and directors for the coming year. The following was the list presented:

    • Commander - Robert Mount
    • Vice Commander - Fred Becker
    • Secretary - Glenn Wienhoff
    • Treasurer - Robert Eader
    • Directors/Executive Committee: Chip Chipley, Gene Rinehart, Tony Malavenda, Richard Cody, Bill Fox, Reggie Kephart and Wendell Murphy
  • The Commander then asked three times for nominations from the floor.
  • He then asked for an acclimation to direct the Secretary to cast one vote for the election of all candidates. Members responded positively and the Secretary recorded one vote to elect all candidates.
  • Chip Chipley then proceeded to swear in all Officers and Directors.

Col. Weber recommended getting school students involved in raising money for the Wall of Remembrance. He will approach the school superintendent.

Jim Miller won the 50/50 and donated his share back to the chapter.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Kephart, seconded by Chipley and the meeting was adjourned at 3:25 pm with a salute to the flag.
