Minutes of Member Meeting
Col. William E. Weber Chapter 142, KWVA
February 8, 2017

Commander Mount called the meeting to order at 2:40 pm.

Chaplain Rinehart offered the opening prayer and the members pledged allegiance to the flag.

Meeting was suspended for a presentation by guest speaker Keith Midberry, USN/USCG (Ret.), Veteran Liaison for Hospice Frederick County. Keith gave a very interesting overview of when to seek Hospice care and benefits available to Veterans. He also provided insight into preparations which can make it easier for survivors to know what is available and where so surviving members can find necessary documents and information. The talk was very informative and well received by the members.

The business meeting then proceeded.

Minutes of the January 11, 2017 meeting were read by Secretary Wienhoff and approved on a motion by Col. Weber, second by Knoebel.

The Treasurerís report was presented by Treasurer Eader consisting of the Balance Sheet and Income and Expense for January 2017. The report was approved by motion of Col. Weber, second by Malavenda.

Four members who had not attended meetings for a while but came as a result of Commander Mountís invitation letter were asked to relate their service experience. Kern Thornton, Rodney Hall, William Lenhart and Earl Smith responded with a short overview of their service.

Col. Weber reported

  • The remains of three killed in action in his unit had recently been identified by DNA matching.
  • The Korean Advisory Council is providing a $200,000 check for the Wall of Remembrance at a ceremony to be held March 4, 2017, 12 noon at the DC Memorial. He asked that Chapters 142, 312 and 313 each provide 5 members to attend and he would provide a van at a cost of $600 for all participants or give each Chapter $100 to cover the cost of a carpool.
  • He said KWVA Chapters nationwide are being encouraged to hold fund raisers to help pay for the Wall. Chapters in South Carolina have pledged $10,000 to be collected.
  • He again proposed that an ad be placed in the local newspaper to recruit Korean Veterans in Frederick County for the chapter.
  • Gen. Sharp, former Commander of U.S. Forces Korea is organizing a Korean Defense Organization for veterans who served in Korea since 1954.
  • He was delighted that Earl Smith is a Rakasan member of airborne troops in Korea.

Old Business: - None

New Business: Wienhoff reported that the Golden Gears Home Run Car Show is being held on June 24, 2017 at Harry Grove Stadium. Veteran Organizations which will be sponsored at the show has not yet been determined. He asked if chapter members would be available for a Color Guard for the opening ceremony if our chapter is again sponsored since the June 25th Korean Commemoration will be near that date (Col. Weber indicated the Korean Ceremony will be on June 24th this year). The members present agreed at least 8 members would be available for a color guard.

Chipley won the 50/50 and he donated his share ($30) back to the Chapter.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Chipley, seconded by Fox and the meeting was adjourned at 3:30 pm with a salute to the flag.
